Math

B.E.S. uses the Common Core Standards in support with the Everyday Math program to guide our math instruction.  We do not exclusively use nor teach the Everyday Math program in it's entirety.  Expect to see a combination of materials from EDM and materials created by our team.
BES is also using ST Math this year!

We gather for a whole class math lesson each day.  For a large portion of our math block children are engaged in math jobs where they work independently or with peers to develop math concepts and skills.  We also play many hands on math games to reinforce skills.  Our math lessons are not one size fits all and I work to differentiate each lesson to appropriately challenge students at the level they are at.
We often discuss in math not only what answer we arrived at, but how got it and how we can 'prove' that it is the right answer.  Having children explain their process and prove that their answer is a reasonable one is part of our work in math.

The first grade team is instituting a new homework policy this year where we are focusing on fluency building type homework activities as opposed to math homework sheets.  Stay tuned for information on how you can help your first grader learn their addition and subtraction facts.
